GDE investigates allegations against principal

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), which is aware of the allegations against Frans Styger, principal of Hoërskool Hugenote, views it in a very serious light.

Styger is being investigated after allegations on Carte Blanche on MNet that implicated him being part of an illegal gold trading scheme.

Phumla Sekhonyane, spokesman for the Department of Education, says Styger is not at the school any more, but reports at their district offices doing administrative work.

“Whenever someone faces such serious allegations, we remove them from that environment until the investigation is finalised,” says Sekhonyane.

“The case has been referred to our Labour Relations Unit for investigation,” she says.

She adds the outcome of the investigation will determine the action to be taken.

The Addie’s Facebook was abuzz with comments on the allegations against Styger.

Many people were shocked that a principal of his stature could get involved in a matter like this.

Keith Roston says: “At least it’s not drugs.”

While many of the concerned parents were a little more upset.

“It is an unbelievable shock, one of the best schools in Springs’ reputation is in tatters, my heart goes out to the innocent learners and teachers,” says Linda Broodryk.

An anonymous parent on the website says, “This is serious, our children’s lives might be in danger and it’s worrying to handle negative cases like this where our children are involved.”

There were also readers who feel it is wrong to judge before the facts are known.
