Lapa goes up in flames in Selection Park

It was allegedly set alight by vagrants living in the empty house next door.

A lapa burned to the ground at a house in Selection Park, this morning.

This lapa, at a house in Coaton Avenue,  caught fire when vagrants allegedly lit a fire in the yard of the empty house next door.

Anna Boulanger, a Selcourt resident, drove past the house at 10.30am and noticed flames on the lapa’s thatch rooftop.

When she stopped to investigate metro plumbers also arrived at the scene

Boulanger says the plumbers tried to gain entry to the premises, but the gate was locked.

It is believed the metro workers called the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services, who arrived within minutes.

Firemen quickly extinguished the fire, although the thatch was still smouldering when the Addie journalist was at the scene.

The road was cordoned off by members of the Selpark Community Policing Forum, who assisted the EMPD in redirecting the traffic.

The owners of the house could not be reached at the time of the incident.
