Hugenote principal under the spotlight

High school principal allegedly implicated in illegal gold trading.

The Springs community is shocked by rumours of an alleged illegal gold trading scam, in which Frans Styger, principal of Hoërskool Hugenote is allegedly implicated.

Styger was placed under the spotlight after MNet’s Carte Blanche recorded the arrangement of a fake deal with him and flighted it on the investigative reality programme, on Sunday evening.

It was reported by Carte Blanche that Styger may be involved in illegal gold trading.

In the recorded phone call, Styger said: “He’ll give you half a million in cash. If no-one sees what everybody does, then no-one gets into sh*t.”

Styger claimed that as long as he was cut into the deal, he could help to sell 1,5kg of illegal gold.

The conversation on the recorded phone call ended with Styger saying: “Because we white people shouldn’t nail each other.”

On Monday it was business as usual at Hoërskool Hugenote.

The school released a statement saying that Styger is still principal and that all activities at the school will continue as normal.

The school governing body has referred the matter to the Gauteng Department of Education for further investigation.

Frans Swart, chairman of the school’s governing body, said no case case been opened against Styger and that a full investigation will be carried out by the Department of Education.

Swart addressed the staff and students at Hugenote on Monday morning.

He confirmed that Styger would remain in his position and has resumed his duties at school on Monday morning.

Swart advised everyone connected to Hugenote to remain calm and continue normally until the investigation is completed.
