The driver was on his way from Durban to Alberton last Thursday when he allegedly phoned his friends in Alberton, instructing them to install a tracker jamming device in the truck.
According to Captain Johannes Ramphora, spokesman for the Springs police, they allegedly installed the device on the horse but it had no effect on the trailer.
It is believed the Durban-based company lost the tracking signal and called in the Combat Private Investigators (CPI), who have units all over South Africa.
Ramphora says the CPI was notified by the company that they detected the trailer signal in Tonk Meter Way in Springs.
They saw the truck following two cars in the direction of the N17 freeway.
He says the driver’s of the two cars noticed the CPI vehicles and turned around fleeing towards KwaThema.
Some of the cars followed them but the other CPI members followed the truck which turned onto the N17.
“The investigators stopped the truck and noticed the driver jumping out of the left hand side of the cab and ran away,” he says.
They called for the assistance of the flying squad who caught up with the man at an informal settlement situated next to the freeway.
He was arrested and taken to the Springs Police Station where a case was opened for attempted theft of truck and cargo.
He appeared in the Springs Regional Court on Friday, but the case has been postponed to September 4.
He remands in custody at the Springs police cells.
