Stadium is vandalised

Ten people were arrested after the DA ward councillor Ramesh Sheodin opened a case of theft at Springs SAPS.

Capt Johannes Ramphora, spokesman of Springs police, confirmed the arrest of the 10 on Thursday morning.

Sheodin says he went to the police after the horror discovery that the Bakerton Stadium’s changerooms and squash court were destroyed within a week.

He felt it as a personal blow and is disappointed with this theft as he and his ward committee spent about R250 000 of council’s community-based project funds of 2012 in renovating the stadium.

Everything that could be resold for scrap was removed.

This includes all the roofs, window frames and steel doors of the changerooms and squash court.

The seats of the stands were also missing.

The squash court’s glass doors were also broken.

He said some Bakerton residents called him on August 1 when they saw the vandals removing these roofs, windows and doors.

“And I don’t know where the security guard was,” says Sheodin.

He described this vandalism in broad daylight as a tragedy, as the people using Bakerton Stadium, from Payneville and Bakerton will loose out on their sports facility.

“The cricket players and soccer players will have no changerooms or toilets to use now,” says Sheodin.
