Clean-up will cause odours

Ekurhuleni Metro is busy cleaning up Presidentsdam in Dersley.

Residents are advised that there will be some unpleasant odours for a while, especially at night.

They are removing water lilies and water hyacinth, which is an aquatic weed originating from South America.

This is declared a category one invasive plant.

These plants need to be removed in order to keep it from covering the dam and blocking out sunlight which, in time, will cause the deaths of many of the aquatic animals.

They will leave certain parts of reeds for habitual and hatching purposes.

These reeds and plants have been a problem for Ekurhuleni since 2008.

The clean-up started on Monday, July 14.

Project manager responsible for water bodies in Ekurhuleni, Chris Mthombeni, wants to make the public aware that they should expect unpleasant odours for the duration of the clean-up.

They are also going to leave the extracted reeds and plants on the shore to dry, as this will be easier to remove than it is when it is wet.

Chris also asks residents who live directly next to the dam to contact him with a time that will suit them the best so that he can send a team to do the cleaning of that part of the dam.

He added that there are many residents who would know the dam better than he does and asks if those individuals could also contact him if they have any knowledge of specific parts of the dam that animals use for breeding or any other information that they deem necessary he should know.

Contact Chris on 083 239 7774 or 011 999 3029 or send an email to chris.mthombeni@ekurhuleni.gov.za
