There’s a new NPO in town

Thandabantu means love for the people, and that is why pensioner, Mirriam Ntsele decided to start the Thandabantu Community Centre in Geduld.

According to Ntsele, she had been helping people by feeding them and offering up rooms in her home for them to stay in for three years before someone told her to register an NPO.

“I didn’t even know what an NPO was at the time,” says Ntsele.

She applied for an NPO number and received it last month.

Ntsele lives in a four-bedroomed house in Geduld and offers up those rooms to those in need of a place to stay.

According to her partner Coen Mans, there are 15 people staying on the premises at the moment, including Mirriam’s family.

Mans says their goal is to give decent food to people and children regularly, but also to provide people with the means to support themselves.

“We are planning on having baking and computer workshops in an attempt to make people more employable,” says Mans.

All funding for the food comes from Mariam’s pension fund as they do not yet have any sponsors or regular donators.

“I’m trying to do some marketing telephonically to get people to donate anything that they can,” says Mans.

Currently Ntsele and Mans have a three-step plan in progress and that is assist, educate and equip.

According to Mans, they will assist and educate people where they can and equip them with the tools to handle life.

When asked what motivated her to start helping people, Ntsele said, “It’s my calling to help people however I can.”

According to Ntsele, she has had a lot stolen from her as a result of letting people stay in her home, but she remains positive and says, “God is on my side so it will be alright.”

Both Ntsele and Mans hope to see Thandabantu grow to new heights.
