Logan goes for gold

Logan Stoltz (10) is a tennis champion in the making.

His interest in tennis started at the age of four when he started playing tennis against the backyard wall.

“He would spend hours practising against the wall. And when he turned seven, he started going for coaching at the Selection Park Tennis Club,” says his mother Esther.

At the age of about eight he wanted to play in tournaments so he entered his first tournament which was played in Benoni.

Esther adds this was his first tournament without any rankings, so he was put into the gold draw and he did very well and ended up in the semi-finals of the gold draw, this was for singles.

Since then Logan has always strived to do better and he is now currently ranked 112 in the U/12 section.

One of the tournaments he played in is the Gauteng East Spring Tournament where he ended seventh in the U/12 singles’ section.

“In the same tournament Logan and his doubles partner played in the U/14 section and they ended up eighth,” she says.

He also entered the Gauteng East closed tournament U/10 age group.

“I have played in the round robin and played about four games of singles and won all of them, 7-0 and then played in the semi-final where I also won, 7-0,” says Logan.

He then went on to win the finals which was best out of three sets where he won 6-2, 6-0.

Coach Ian Iggleton says Logan also played doubles with Stephi Matic from the Selection Park Tennis Club and they lost in the finals of the doubles in this tournament.

Logan is currently playing in the Curro Mini Dros tournament in Pretoria which is being held over two weekends.

Last weekend he lost his first match to the fifth seeded player, but since then he has won all his other matches 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-0.

He played two matches on Saturday which he won 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1,6-0.

Logan is home-schooled and is currently in Grade Five.

His mother says he loves to watch sports on TV, including rugby, soccer and tennis.

“My favourite team is the All Backs and in soccer, Bayern Munich,” he says.

Danny, Logan’s father, is his hero because he is always there for Logan.

Logan says his father works hard and always believes in him no matter what.

The other person he looks up to is the tennis player, Novak Djokovic, as he puts a lot of hard work into his tennis.

He also loves to play X-Box and computer games, especially sports games.

His mother says he is doing very well at school and his marks are good.

If Logan had a choice of sport he will always choose tennis.

He says that he watched his brother Pieter, when he started playing tennis and from there that is all he wanted to do, and to one day be able to play doubles with his big brother.

“So far my favourite memories of tournament are that I won the Gauteng East Closed tournament,” he says, “because I always like to win and do my best and I got a trophy.”

Otherwise he enjoys every tournament he plays because he then sees that he can improve and one day play overseas in the big tournaments.

Both Logan and Pieter enjoy playing at Selection Park Tennis Club.

Mother Esther says if they could they would spend seven days a week on the tennis courts.

“They both would love it if there were more younger people who would join to play tennis at the club, because then tennis can start growing in Springs once again,” she adds.

Ian Iggleton has been Pieter and Logan’s coach and they absolutely think he is the best coach.
