Operation clamps down on illegal mining

The police confiscated illegal mining equipment during the raid.

Kwatsaduza – Seven suspects were arrested in Springs on Tuesday during the integrated illegal mining Operation Shanela.

Law enforcers arrested the suspects for illegal immigration.

Seven phendukas, a water pump motor, a gearbox and other illegal mining equipment were confiscated during the raid.

One water pump motor, a grinder and a lead extension cable were found abandoned.

Ekurhuleni police spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela said the suspects would soon appear before the Springs Magistrate’s Court.

Ekurhuleni district commissioner Major General Anna Sithole commended the members’ efforts in addressing the proliferation of illegal mining in the district and encouraged community members to report those involved in the illegal mining activities anonymously.
