Man arrested for lying to police

A false report puts a lot of strain on police resources.

A man was arrested on Tuesday for perjury after he opened a false case of hijacking in Springs.

The man reported that on May 29, two metro police officers armed with firearms allegedly hijacked his work truck that was loaded with copper.

As investigations progressed, it was established that the man was never hijacked but rather colluded with an accomplice, who has not yet been arrested, to steal from the company.

The man is expected to appear in court soon.

The management of SAPS in Gauteng has warned those who commit crimes and try to conceal their actions by opening criminal cases.

A false report puts a lot of strain on police resources, which could have been directed to real incidents of crime and to victims who need police assistance.

The public is warned to refrain from reporting false cases as that is a criminal offence and they can face criminal charges.
