Crime intelligence operations continue to yield positive results after a 39-year-old was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

A 39-year-old man was arrested for possessing an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition at the Bakerton taxi rank on Monday.
Members of the Ekurhuleni District Crime Intelligence Aggravated Robbery Team and the Springs SAPS Vispol followed up on information about a man driving a white VW Polo hatchback in the area.
Springs SAPS communications officer Sergeant Themba Tshabalala said after police conducted a search, they identified the man fitting the description sitting alone in the vehicle.
“Police searched the car and discovered a 9mm gun under the driver’s seat,” said Tshabalala.
“When interrogated, he failed to provide any plausible reasons for why the firearm was there.”

Tshabalala added that the firearm’s serial number was filed off, and one SAPS engraved batch could be visibly seen on the weapon.
“Three of the five recovered rounds of ammunition were state property.”
Investigations proved that the vehicle was not stolen, and the vehicle was booked in at the SAPS vehicle impound.
The man was immediately arrested and taken to the Springs SAPS for detention. He will soon appear at the Springs Magistrate’s Court.
Ekurhuleni deputy district commissioner Brigadier Lebohang Machakela commended the members for their swift response in ensuring that Ekurhuleni is a safer place.
He encouraged community members to continue working closely with police to address the proliferation of unlicensed firearms.
