Selcourt residents demand that they be disconnected from the Kwa-Thema grid

The residents said they have for more than five years been requesting their ward councillors to remedy the situation but without success.

Kwatsaduza – The residents of Selcourt Estate took to the streets, demanding that they be removed from the troubled Kwa-Thema main substation grid.

The frustrated community blocked Rhokana Street on Friday night with burning tyres and rocks.

This is after the substation burned down two weeks ago.

In a memorandum submitted to Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana on Friday during his visit to the area, the residents demanded that the cable that supplies their community with electricity be removed from the Kwa-Thema grid.

The residents said they have for more than five years been requesting their ward councillors to remedy the situation but without success.

In their memorandum, they stated their electricity is not restored on time during load-shedding as per the Eskom schedule.

They only have power for four hours on most days due to load-shedding and load reduction, which is implemented for the residents of Kwa-Thema. It is said many of the Kwa-Thema residents fail to pay for their electricity consumption.

They also raised the following concerns:
• Appliances and food are negatively affected as they don’t know when the load reduction would be implemented or restored.

• Constant cable theft affecting their supply is also one of the biggest challenges. They tried to cover one of the main cables in Ext 3 with concrete recently, but thieves still stole it,” he added.

• The residents of Selcourt pay for their electricity, therefore, they feel they deserve services accordingly.
