Springs SPCA embroiled in court case for animal cruelty against local breeder

The Springs SPCA asks for the public's support in the upkeep of the animals.

The Springs SPCA was alerted to alleged animal cruelty by a local breeder last August.

The SPCA started legal proceedings after an investigation confirmed the allegations.

“We applied for and executed a warrant and have since laid charges against the breeder for severe animal cruelty under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.

“We take this case very seriously. We want the public to understand the fights we fight being the voice of the voiceless,” said the Springs SPCA manager and inspector, Annecia Morton.

The animals were seized and are in the custody of the Springs SPCA pending the court’s judgement.

“The public will be kept up to date on the progress of this case. We are confident that justice will be served for the animals that suffered at the hands of this breeder,” Morton explained.

The SPCA thanks the Springs residents for their support and asks that they keep opening their hearts to the needs of the animals.

“The costs for the upkeep of these animals are costly, and the public is encouraged to support us with food, at a minimum, to keep them going,” said Morton.

Due to the nature of the case, the SPCA can’t divulge much information, but they are more than happy to discuss the welfare of all animals to prevent future incidents like this from happening.

“The public is more than welcome to contact us should they have any queries or need information to care for their animals. They should also familiarise themselves with the laws that protect animals and ensure they are not in violation of said laws,” added Morton.

The first sitting for the year was on February 21 but it was postponed to March 1.

In an update, the breeder was confirmed to have found legal representation, so the SPCA is confident the legal proceedings will move forward.

The next court sitting is on March 23.
