Inclement weather affecting waste removal services

Rainy weather has created muddy conditions at landfill sites, slowing turnaround times for waste removal.

Residents of Ekurhuleni could experience delays in garbage collection because the persistent rain makes it a challenge to transport the waste to the saturated landfills.

According to the metro spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, the local landfill sites are muddied to such an extent that they are traps for the waste trucks.

The most affected areas include Boksburg, Germiston, Edenvale, Kempton Park, Thembisa and Alberton. Affected landfill sites are Simmer and Jack and Platkop.

Dlamini pointed out that these sites are used by most vehicles that serve the affected communities because of their proximity.

“As the rain persists, trucks will use the not-badly affected Rietfontein landfill site in Springs as an offloading zone to ease the pressure.

“The muddy conditions at the sites affect the turnaround time in waste management services, resulting in a negative impact on the already strained waste removal service in the city.

“In recent weeks, the city’s vehicles and those of services providers have taken longer to do their rounds because of the time they take to navigate their way around the landfill sites.

“The city will continue to render the normal round collections despite the challenges. In areas that we may have missed on a particular day, the backlog will be attended to within a day or two at most.”
