Ekurhuleni commemorates World Diabetes Day to raise awareness

City of Ekurhuleni gives pointers for diabetic patients

The City of Ekurhuleni commemorated World Diabetes Day on Monday at the Daveyton main clinic.

One of the key messages shared with the people was a reminder that diabetes remains the second leading cause of death in South Africa, after tuberculosis according to Statistics South Africa’s mortality and causes of death report.

Experts have made it clear that diabetes can be managed if diagnosed early and the patient does not default on treatment.

Some of the ailments attributable to untreated diabetes are blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks and illnesses affecting the nervous system.

Nonhlanhla Maseko, an ophthalmic nurse at Daveyton clinic, urged diabetes patients to be careful when cutting their nails, especially their feet.

Diabetes patients are advised that cutting the toenails needs special skill. You need to start cutting the nails from both edges, then cut in the middle.

While doing this, patients are warned to make sure that there are no injuries. Diabetic people must avoid injuries as some may not heal.
