Meals on Wheels is in dire need of donations

Meals on Wheels had planned a fundraising event in November. However, due to a lack of funds, they had to postpone the event until further notice.

With the rising cost of living, local NGO Meals on Wheels is struggling to stay afloat for their daily needs.

Meals on Wheels makes and delivers food to the less fortunate and is operating from Sewende Dag Adventiste Kerk in Petersfield.

The focus of Meals on Wheels is to provide food to those who are in need in the Springs community and surrounding areas.

It remains evident that for almost 30 years, the NGO has been preparing and delivering over 200 freshly packaged meals daily to the community, but now they have reduced their meals to 150 daily.

This is due to a decrease in donations and sponsors pulling out, and they are now unable to deliver enough meals to some of their beneficiaries.

“This is a very dire situation that we find ourselves in,” said Meals on Wheels leader Daleen Enslin.

“I look at some of our senior citizens and sometimes there aren’t any words to utter but tears. We are all doing what we can because of the love and passion that we have to help those in need,

“Since the pandemic, it feels like I’m begging, but I don’t want to feel like a beggar. We are in need and I pray every day for the provision of food.”

Enslin said she has had to offer her car to make daily deliveries as the organisation’s car is dilapidated. She added they now depend on help from other local organisations to help them with food.

“Myself and other NGOs are all facing difficulties and we depend on each other to overcome them,” she said.

“We have adapted to a bartering system where we exchange food or items that we each have for daily needs.”

Enslin and the volunteers of Meals on Wheels are appealing to the community to assist them with donations that include food, packaging, kitchen equipment and stationery.

“We are so grateful for the amazing love that our community has given the organisation. We are hoping they will come to our rescue once again,” she said.
