Forces rally to restore Springs War Memorial to former glory

"A lot of people have come to me and said I am wasting my time. I am not wasting my time," she declared.

Community members and various stakeholders gathered on October 22 to clean up the War Memorial.

This was a joint initiative spearheaded by Ward 75 Clr Charmaine Kock who holds the once prestigious heritage site close to her heart.

“My drive behind the clean-up is the promise I made when I was appointed as a councillor. I intend on staying committed to the community,” said Kock.

The project is an ongoing one where it is hoped the site will be restored to its former glory.

Kock admits that this was not a one-man project as many organisations volunteered with the manpower and resources needed for the clean-up. They could not, however, have children around due to the used needles lying around the site.

“We thank the help of local businesses because without them we would not be able to achieve what we achieved today,” she said.

She is adamant to fix the town of Springs with several projects.

“We have arranged for floodlights and the installation of cameras, so this area is not in the dark anymore. It will also be monitored round the clock,” she said.

She issued a stern warning to those who continue to desecrate the town and use the site as a place to conduct illegal activities.

“My message to all of those that are currently dumping at the War Memorial is to be careful because you are going to be caught,” she warned.
