Cable theft derails Ekurhuleni Hip-Hop Awards

The highly anticipated event in the Ekurhuleni music industry had to be postponed due to cable theft.

“I have been working with the Springs Arts and Music Theatre for four years and nothing like this has ever happened.”

These are the words of the founder and chairperson of the Ekurhuleni Hip-Hop Awards, Tshepo Moagi. This comes after the shock of arriving at the venue to set up and rehearse for the show on October 4 and finding the theatre in darkness.

Theatre manager Zweli Sibiya confirmed that earlier that day, there had been an alleged copper theft at one of the substations in Springs and it directly affected the theatre.

What worried Moagi more were the performers and first-time nominees whose loved ones travelled from far to come and support them for the show on October 7.

“The sponsors were understanding, but the nominees were quite upset with the situation,” said Moagi.

An enquiry was sent to the metro, which confirmed that a complaint had been lodged with regard to a power outage due to theft. Power has since been restored.

The awards ceremony has been postponed until further notice.
