Centre needs community’s support this Disability Month

“Epilepsy South Africa recognises and acknowledges the importance of disability issues and strives to mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.”

The residents and staff of Epilepsy SA in Geduld commemorated Disability Month with a sports day last Tuesday.
“Epilepsy South Africa recognises and acknowledges the importance of disability issues and strives to mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities,” explained the centre’s communications officer, Valentine Muradzikwa.
The United Nations has declared the theme for 2021 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) as leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-Covid-19 world.
“The Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, launched Disability Rights Awareness Month (DRAM) 2021 with the theme The Year of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke – Create and Realise an Inclusive Society Upholding Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

“That is why Epilepsy SA marked the beginning of the month with celebrations at Geduld Centre. Our centres in Geduld, Daggafontein and the Braamfontein workshop are the only places of happiness our residents know.
“We had different games, from cricket, netball, pool to soccer,” he added.
The DRAM 2021 campaign is observed from November 3 to December 3.
The last day also marks International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
“We are appealing to the public as the curtain comes down on a challenging year to assist us with donations to help us lift the standard of life of people with epilepsy and other disabilities.
“Call our office for more information on 011 811 1590,” said Muradzikwa.
