Metro promises to clear waste removal backlog over Easter weekend

Residents of some areas in Springs claim their refuse has not been collected for the past two weeks.

Residents of some areas in Springs claim their refuse has not been collected for the past two weeks.
Johana le Roux lives on the ground floor of a block of flats on First Avenue.
“The situation is so bad now there are worms crawling out of the bins into our homes,” she said.
Le Roux claimed even though waste trucks were spotted around town, they have not picked up refuse along First Avenue in some time.
On Thursday, the resident and the building manager of the block of flats where she resides went to the Ekurhuleni Waste Management Springs Depot to find out why the rubbish has not been collected.

“We were told there are no trucks available at the time, but we could see the trucks parked on the premises,” she added.
She said they were also told they will have to get new bins with the metro’s logo.
“We were told each bin is R1 400, and we would need 16 for the building complex,” she explained.
When asked if there is a backlog in waste collection in the area, the City of Ekurhuleni stated it already has a plan to correct the issue by next Monday.
