Delving into the past

The man was then allegedly tied up in a nearby veld.

This week we look back at the Advertiser’s January 20, 2006 edition.
• Fallen load crushes man
A man was killed on Monday afternoon when a truckload of 36 tons of compressed plastic fell on him.
“According to eyewitnesses the man was sitting on a wall where the trailer was parked at about 4.30pm in First Street, Springs when the trailer’s legs collapsed under its weight and the load fell on him,” said Insp George Raphulu of the Springs police.
The man was crushed and suffocated.
A stormwater pipe was ruptured by one of the trailer’s legs and water gushed down Fifth Avenue.
The truck was on its way from Bloemfontein to drop off the load at a local company.
It is not yet known why the trailer had been unhitched from the truck but police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
It took emergency workers nearly two hours to get the man’s body out from under the pile of plastic.
The deceased is yet to be identified.

• Beware of the latest theft scam
A man was conned out of R5 000 after drawing cash from inside the Absa bank in Fifth Avenue on Monday.
According to a police report he had withdrawn the money and as he walked outside he saw a woman picking up a plastic bag containing cash.
The woman approached him and said he should come with her so that they could share the money.
The man accompanied the woman to a white Toyota Corolla and drove with her to First Street, Geduld.
In Geduld they were approached by three men, one of whom was armed.
The men alleged that they were policemen investigating a case where the money had been stolen and ordered the 43-year-old man out of the car.
He was forced to hand over the cash, which was placed in an envelope. Later an envelope was returned to him.
The man was then allegedly tied up in a nearby veld after which the men fled.
A local worker found him and untied him.
When the man checked the envelope he found it was filled with folded up paper. Residents are warned to be especially wary after withdrawing cash at ATMs or banks.
They should be suspicious if they see a person picking up money and then being asked to share it.
