Kattitude wants to curb cat poisonings

Kitching and Thorpe believe it is important to educate people about cats.

Kattitude members Tanya Kitching and Mandy Thorpe, and veterinarian Dr Thulani Mthimunye, are disturbed by the recent rapid rise in cases of cat poisoning.
They have found that Edelweiss has been a particular hotspot for such crimes.
“These are not only feral cats that are being poisoned, but domesticated cats as well.
“Cats are nocturnal animals and they wander around at night and this bothers some people,” said Kitching.
Kitching and other members of Kattirude try and sterilise as many cats as possible.

“It’s sad but sometimes the best option is just to sterilise them. This way they can’t reproduce and they will also be less likely to wander around looking for a mate,” said Thorpe.
Kitching and Thorpe believe it is important to educate people about cats.
“People need to learn that cats are harmless to people, most of the time they are just hunting and looking for food. If you don’t want them in your yard, chase them away with water and they won’t be likely to return.
“We understand that they can be a nuisance but that’s why places like Kattitude and the SPCA exist in the first place,” said Thorpe.
Both Kitching and Thorpe request residents who encounter a stray cat to immediately phone the SPCA or Kattitude to come and collect the cat.

“These animals need help, and there are many people out there who want to help and adopt them.
“Animal cruelty is a big issue in our society, and cats are treated especially poorly.
“I think there is misconception among people that cats are somehow evil animals, but this is obviously untrue and they need to be treated with respect,” said Mthimunye.
