Toddler faces prospect of going deaf

The Selcourt toddler has a grommet, a device inserted to help with inner ear infections, and over the past few months a growth has developed in the same ear.

Three-year-old Tyrell Green is facing the prospect of going completely deaf unless he gets the operation he urgently needs.
The Strubenvale toddler has a grommet, a device inserted to help with inner ear infections, and over the past few months a growth has developed in the same ear.

Tyrell Green (3) needs to have an operation to remove a growth in his ear.

His mother, Vionne Green, explained that before he was a year old, Tyrell had been in hospital six times.
It was during one of these hospital stays that the grommet was inserted.
“About a year ago I noticed his ear was leaking fluid and it had a strong pungent smell, I took him to a GP where he was given antibiotics and it cleared for a few days.
“Not long after, it started up again and I then took him to an ENT who couldn’t even see if the grommet was still in because the infection was so bad.

“Again, I was given antibiotics and sent home.
“At the end of last year I reached my limit and decided at the beginning of this year to take him to a specialist.
“We took him to the specialist who is absolutely amazing and he suctioned a lot of “mucus” out of his ear and then confirmed the growth which is blocking his grommet and causing hearing loss,” said Vionne.
Vionne described Tyrell as a “rockstar” throughout the ordeal.

The three-year-old has had numerous ear infections over the years.

“He is such a champion, he never complains about it, but is somewhat self-conscious about it and will tell people he has “germs” in his ear.”
“He plays normally, loses his breath quickly due to the asthma but he is so strong, you’ll never see it affect him.
“I’ve had to stop his swimming lessons due to the constant ear infections.” she said.
Vionne has the support of her family who has rallied around Tyrell.
His sister Kimberleigh has taken on a mommy role and looks after her brother everywhere they go, and Vionne described her as her right hand.

For Tyrell’s operation, the family requires R17 048.
The operation will help preserve his hearing, and the longer Tyrell has to wait, the greater the chance of him suffering permanent hearing loss.
