Crime in Springs increasing, reveal stats

Crime on the rise in Springs, reveals crime stats

Springs remains a dangerous place in which to run a business, have a home or drive.
This was revealed in the release of the second quarter crime stats, for the period July to September 2020, released by Gauteng police last week.
Earlier this year, Minister of Police Gen Bheki Cele announced the stats would be released on a quarterly basis and said he hoped this new approach would allow for timely intervention measures aimed at crime reduction.
The stats are made up of 21 overall crime categories, 17 of which are those reported by the public and the remaining four are those as a result of police action.

Overall, there was an increase in crime in the second quarter when compared to the first quarter from April to June 2020, which was largely due to the stricter lockdown levels during the previous quarter.
In-contact crimes are crimes in which the victims themselves are the targets of violence or property is targeted and the victims in the vicinity during the commission of the crime are subjected to threats of violence or the use of such violence.
The subcategories which fall under contact crimes such as common assault, murder, sexual offences and common robbery were all down when compared to the same period last year.
The only subcategory that saw increase was attempted murder, which grew by 85 cases.
Property-related crimes across the country deceased by an impressive 18.7 per cent when compared to the same period last year.
