Delving into the past

We look back at a week in 1993

This week we look back at the Advertiser’s December 24, 1993, edition.
• Wayne roars to the Comores
Wayne Houlson, manager of the OK Bazaars in Palm Springs complex, has been awarded an overseas trip in a countrywide Simba competition.
With his assistant, Peter Ball, the area sales manager for OK, the two men put their heads together and came up with the winning idea.
In August, the Simba group offered its traders a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
This incentive was based on an in-store Explorers 2 space display competition.
The entry was open to all Simba’s traders nationally and the closing date was on November 19.
A space tunnel was built by the Springs team with absolute originality and was full of interesting creations.
The music playing in the tunnel, Empire Strikes Back from Star Wars really gave visitors the impression that they were travelling in space.
Also included in the Springs store’s display was a video screening of the film, 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Many other decorations depicting a space scene could also be seen.
Houlson and his assistant both won prizes.
Houlson is jet setting to Comores with his wife to an all-expenses-paid holiday, while Peter Ball takes a cheque home of R1 500 as second prize.
