• Birds die in their thousands
A gang poisoned over 100 guinea fowl and other birds in a farm Droogfontein.
This was the third mass killing of birds on the farm over the previous three years.
They gang killed the birds by scattering poisoned mealies in the area where the guinea fowl live, and hoped to eat the dead birds.
The farmers were very upset with the killing of the birds which they said ate the insects which could destroy their crops and harmful weeds.
The gang of four faced charges of poisoning of game and possession of dead game, despite the knowledge that the game was not lawfully hunted.
