Fire leaves family of nine with nothing

Langaville – The Khumalo family was left to pick up the pieces following a massive fire on Saturday, which left them with nothing.

The incident took place at around 7am in the morning. Neighbours assisted in putting out the fire, but by then it was too late.

The fire started at one of the shacks built behind the house, after one of the daughters left her son indoors with a two-bar heater on.

According to the family, the fire was started by the youngest grandson, when he accidentally threw one of his T-shirts on the heater.

House owner Belina Khumalo, a 60-year-old pensioner, says her family suffered a great loss with the fire.

What is left of the Khumalo family house in Langaville.

“The fire broke out in the shack, spread to the house and the other shacks in the yard were caught on fire.

“We are left with nothing, no bed, clothes, food. We are just happy nobody got hurt,” says Khumalo.

The family is pleading to the community to lend a helping hand.

“My grandchildren all lost their school books, stationery and their school uniform. I would appreciate it if we could get some kind of assistance.

“We are forced to all live in one shack, which we had to rebuild with burnt material just to avoid sleeping in the streets. Times are very hard for us as no one is working,” she adds.
