Parents urged to take part in a reading campaign for pre-school learners

Writer urges parents to play an active role in their children's educational needs.

Duduza -The 1 Teach One campaign will be donating books to five underprivileged children and aims to promote online learning with a parent and child reading session, along with a series of online classes.

The campaign is organised by director of Bennico Comic, Senzo Mthembu, who is a self-taught book illustrator.

The purpose of the campaign is to encourage reading amongst pre-school learners.

Mthembu has previously worked with Early Childhood Development Centres by donating reading materials and supplying the centres with his very own illustration books for children.

“The campaign aims to help parents and their children, especially three-to-six-year-olds.

“We all know that Covid-19 has made it difficult for learning and for ECDs to continue teaching children.

Children’s learning books designed and produced by Senzo Mthembu of Bennico Comic in Duduza.

“Currently, we are putting together a team to help bring the vision into reality because it is not everyone who has access to the internet, laptops or smart phones, and data is expensive.

“Therefore, we want to ensure that the platform we are going to use is easily accessible and doesn’t cost much,” he says.

His company manufactures and delivers children’s book at various pre-schools within Ekurhuleni.

“I started drawing back in primary school at the age of 11.

“I published my first book in 2015, which was inspired by my son.

“I have published four books under my company, we are now looking into producing more books in different languages,” he explains.

He is urging parents to play an active role in their children’s educational needs.

“We want to give this whole fourth industrial revolution that everyone is talking about a chance, and for that I would like to invite pre-school teachers to also come and work with us and deliver quality education to the young ones,” he adds.
