Veritas matrics are back at their desks

This is the first time learners and teachers have been on site since schools were closed in March.

Veritas College matric learners were back at school on Monday morning.

This is the first time learners and teachers have been on site since schools were closed in March.

The school has 41 matric learners, and over 60 per cent turned up.

The school was well prepared for the learners’ return.

There were posters and information booklets about the virus throughout the school and learners were taught about Covid-19 and its symptoms.

On entry, each learner sanitised their hands, went through a Covid-19 questionnaire and had their temperature taken.

Should a learner have a temperature of over 38 degrees, they will be quarantined in the sick room until their parent can come fetch them.

Before lessons began, acting head Judy Achary spoke to the learners about their new way of life at the school during the outbreak, before they headed off to their classrooms.

The classrooms were prepared in advanced for the learners’ return.

“We have to maintain social distancing at all times, which means no hugging or congregating in groups.

“If you move classes with subject changes, you must sanitise your desk and chair before you sit down.

“Do not share lunch, pens or utensils,” says Achary.

Achary also insisted that should a learner or staff member have Covid-19, they will not be stigmatised and will be treated with respect.

For the time being, the school is not receiving visitors and parents are not allowed to get out of their cars when dropping their children off.

The private school was the only high school in Springs that opened on Monday after the reopening of the schools was postponed to June 8.
