Motorists drive in the dark on Grootvaly Road

The road has 18 street lights, of which only one is working.

Residents at the Grootvlei Estate are worried about the lack of working street lights on Grootvaly Road.

The road has 18 street lights, of which only one is working.

Clive Billowes, who lives in the estate, says over the years there have been a number of accidents on the sharp bend on the road due to a lack of visibility.

“We recently had a hijacking due to the darkness in the area.

“A Transnet vehicle which came to collect another Transnet worker living in the estate was hijacked in the dark, in front of one of our boom gates, and the hijackers took the driver with them.

“Fortunately the driver was dropped off on the N12 and he could make his way back to the police station,” says Billowes.

Billowes suspects the hijackers were lying in wait in the bushes for the drivers and were not spotted because of how dark it is.

The sewage and the lack of lighting on this sharp bend on Grootvlei Road is a hazard to motorist driving here.

Adding to the danger of the road is the sewage that runs down it.

Billowes says he suspects the new low-cost housing development water drainage system is faulty, which causes flooding on the road.

“The sewage runs for days, even weeks, after rainstorms and poses a major health risk.

“The stench of the sewage is also quite bad.

“These issues are at some stage going to have fatal consequences,” says Billowes.

The metro failed to respond in time for publication.
