‘Be there for those who aren’t coping too well on their own’

I have learnt well to keep my opinions, social and political commentary – and snarky remarks – to myself.

However, in the light of what seems to be the most chaotic time ever experienced in modern history (I think), I thought I’d share my views with you.

Coronavirus will probably remain the topic receiving the most media coverage in the history of ever – understandably so… I’ve never experienced a global panic of this magnitude and it saddens me to think of the predictable few months that lie ahead for pretty much every person on this planet.

After playing with the idea for a number of days, I’ve comforted myself by believing that perhaps Mother Nature is trying to restore some sort of balance.

Still, this doesn’t soften the blow felt by thousands of families around the world, nor does it explain the continuous stream of chaos we seem to be experiencing.

Furthermore, locusts are now terrorising parts of Africa, China has been faced with bird flu, right in the middle of the biggest crisis ever seen.

The Amazon has been burning for I’m not even sure how long, Australia is losing livestock and crops by the day (not to mention human beings), the USA is retaliating in Iraq (as if there wasn’t enough going on) and we are, of course, still hard at work at fixing world hunger, right?

Large corporate companies in Italy have put a hold on mortgages and household debt – an act of compassion that can be commended by anyone.

I feel it necessary to promote this kind of culture going forward.

It seems we’re in a pretty dark time.

If I failed to mention any other wars/diseases/disasters currently afflicting the world – I apologise.

Oh right, the entire stock market crashed too.

As a species, we seem to be pretty vulnerable at this stage.

The point I hope to make along with my call to action is that we’re in need of kindness.

Mental health issues are sure to intensify going forward, so you need to be there for the people around you and ask for help if you’re the person that needs it.

I understand that most people are not really in a position to give much, I know what that’s like.

But you can always listen.

Make time for the people around you (Skype is a thing) because we’re going through a scary time.

If you read my whole column, thank you.

This is an appeal to everyone who reads it to not forget your humanity and humility in chaotic times.

Consider those around you – even if you don’t know them.

Be there for those who aren’t coping too well on their own.
