Zidane Govender wins the Vdub Camp Fest

Govender says the win hasn't really sunk in yet and he is still in a state of disbelief.

Zidane Govender beat three other youngsters from around the country to win the national Vdub Camp Fest competition last month in Bela-Bela, Limpopo.

The national competition celebrates all things VW and involves a renowned Show & Shine competition.

It features a variety of categories with over 400 contestants, who are shortlisted to around 120 vehicles via pre-registration.

The show normally establishes the best project cars in the country for the current year.

The competition has been running in South Africa for 12 years and lasts over three days.

Eleven-year-old Zidane won in the junior competition for his car, which he built 90 per cent of.

His father, Brendan, helped him with the more complicated parts like the electronics of the car.

The win was a complete surprise for Zidane , who was competing for the first time.

“My father gave me this car two years ago to work on and I wasn’t really interested.

“But then last year, he persuaded me to take part in the competition.

Govender says he is looking forward to defending his title next year.

“There were a few really long nights working on the car, but I’m very proud of what we achieved,” says Zidane .

Zidane says the win hasn’t really sunk in yet and he is still in a state of disbelief.

“When they called my name I was shocked.

“What was also nerve-wrecking was that I had to drive the car up on stage, and I didn’t want to make a mistake.

“On top of that, I had to do a live interview on stage with MC Vic Pardal, who also chose my car as his favourite car in the category.”

This is the first time a person from Bakerton has won the competition.

“My family is really proud of me and what I did, but my father especially was very happy.

“He is passionate about cars and this was a dream come true for him,” says Zidane .

The Veritas College learner says he now plans to take part in more competitions this year before starting to prepare for next year’s Vdub competition.
