AfriForum cleans dumping site

“We want to make our actions visible and encourage the community to keep their surroundings clean.”

AfriForum Springs took it upon themselves to clean a dumping site in Springs New on Saturday morning.

A dumping site on vacant ground in 9th Street has been an eyesore for the community for a long time and they have complained about the metro failing to take any action.

AfriForum hired gardeners from a local company who worked tirelessly to cut the overgrown grass and remove the heaps of refuse that have been piling up for many months.

Dumping sites are a persisting problem in Springs and AfriForum says that people should start taking action to keep their surroundings clean.

AfriForum Springs chairperson Cornell Swart says: “The municipality has not been doing their job.

“We want to make our actions visible and encourage the community to keep their surroundings clean.

“We are saying that we are still standing up for ourselves and our community.”

Swart says he hopes that their cleaning efforts will lift morale by showing people that there are people in the community who want the town to be clean and are willing to do the work.

The surrounding neighbours were very appreciative of AfriForum’s efforts.

Previously, divisional head of communication and media relations of the City of Ekurhuleni has said that dumping sites occur because “the community has no respect for their environment and dump regularly”.

He advises that: “Refuse should be placed in refuse bins for collection by the municipality.”

In response to our inquiry, Divisional Head: Communication and Media Relations, Nhlanhla Cebekhulu states the following:

“This is a typical example of the disregard for the environment and the community. Information received is that it took place during the night when it is not so visible. “A ‘No Dumping’ notice is even erected on the mentioned stand but with no success.

“Waste Management Services is busy finalising a contract whereby extra members of the community will be deploy to assist with the cleaning of illegal dumping, especially in the CBD areas.”
