Metro responds to illegal dumping of carcasses

The metro adds that if illegal dumping takes place on privately owned land, the landowner is responsible for clearing the stand after receiving a notice from the metro's environmental health division.

A concerned resident notified the Addie of carcasses dumped on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Beyers Street in Springs CBD.

The piles of remains seem to belong to more than one animal.

In response to a media inquiry, the metro says: “This issue was brought to the metro’s attention and the carcasses were removed by an appointed contractor on January 31, 2020.”

However, the carcasses in question were still on the lot on February 3.

When asked for clarity about where the metro cleaned up, Nhlanhla Cebekhulu, metro’s divisional head of communications and media relations, says: “It seems there are now different areas were carcasses were illegally dumped.

“The area cleaned on January 31, 2020, was the stand where the old SPAR building was.

“The photo seems to be the parking lot opposite the old SPAR.

“Carcasses were also found in Sixth Street today.

“Waste Management officials will clean the other spots.”
