New Era substation on fire

The restoration time for electricity has yet to be determined.

The substation in New Era on the corner of South Main Reef Road caught fire at approximately 4pm this afternoon.

Firefighters responded quickly and were able to damp down the flames swiftly.

While the Addie journalist was on scene, emergency personal were unable to offer information about the cause of the fire or when electricity will be restored.

Fire fighters referred the Addie to William Ntladi, district manager media liaison of Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) and we await his comment.

However, our journalist on the scene reports: “When I arrived, just after 5pm, smoke was coming from inside the substation and the roof on the Paul Kruger-facing side looked as if it might cave in.”

Witness Liana Hoeben, who was on the scene, says: “I received a phone call and saw that the substation was on fire.

“We drove over to see what was happening.”

Firefighters were on scene promptly to douse the flames.

According to her firefighters responded quickly.

One of the firefighters told the Addie that although they were on scene and able to douse the blaze quickly, the entire main frame is burnt.

We await further information about the cause of the fire and extent of the damage from Ntladi.

At this stage, based on comments received on the Springs Advertiser Facebook page, it seems the affected areas include (but is not limited to) Geduld, Strubenvale, Edelweiss, Petersfield, the CBD, Casseldale, Largo and Dal Fouche.

Information will be shared as it becomes available.
