SPCA confiscates 41 pedigree dogs from KUSA registered breeder

The Boksburg SPCA will be laying criminal charges of cruelty to animals against the breeder.

The Springs SPCA alongside the Boksburg SPCA rescued 41 pedigree dogs from a house in Selcourt on Friday.

The SPCAs seized 37 Yorkshire Terriers and four Toy Pomeranians from the breeder, some of whose dogs are registered with the Kennel Union of Southern Africa (KUSA).

KUSA promotes the well-being and improvement of dogs by emphasising the responsible pet ownership and responsible breeding for all dogs.

It aims to serve both its members and South African society, as a whole, by promoting the improvement and well-being of dogs, by emphasising the importance of purebred dogs and the responsible breeding of all dogs by promoting responsible ownership to all ages and sectors of society, by reinforcing the necessity of educating both dog and owner through the Canine Good Citizen Scheme.

The Springs SPCA says they had received complaints from the public regarding the large number of animals on the property.

Prior to the confiscation of the animals, the Springs SPCA had left several notices at the property requesting to speak to the breeder and do an inspection, but all went unanswered.

Once a court order was granted to enter the premises to inspect the animals, inspectors from both SPCAs were horrified to find dogs of high value living in small, filthy pens inside the home.

“Animals were kept in bedrooms, bathrooms and even in the kitchen of the house.

“They were infested with parasites and some were left to live in their own faecal matter and urine with their litters of new-born puppies.

“Many of the animals appeared to have not been groomed in years.

“It is a fact that Toy breed dogs with long fur should be professionally groomed at least once a month,” says Boksburg SPCA manager Vicky Finnermore.

Matted fur can lead to severe medical problems such as bacterial infections, as it traps moisture and can cause damage to the skin.

Fleas and ticks can live deep in the matted hair.

Mats around the hind end cause an accumulation of faeces which results in flies laying eggs in the animal’s fur.

High-maintenance pets should be brushed daily and frequently checked for eye and ear infections.

The confiscated dogs were taken back to Boksburg and are being treated for various health problems.

The Boksburg SPCA will be laying criminal charges of cruelty to animals against the breeder.

The dogs cannot be placed up for adoption until the matter is finalised.

On Monday, Finnermore said the owner of the dogs was on the property during the confiscation of the dogs and had not been in touch.
