No hope in site for Bakerton cemetery

This in turn has increased the amount of break-ins around the cemetery.

The cemetery in Bakerton continues to be subject to vandalism and theft

The Addie reported on the issue in October last year and the situation has grown worse.

Thieves have stolen much of the fencing around the cemetery and nothing is being done to stop this.

This in turn has increased the amount of break-ins and theft in homes around the cemetery.

The grass surrounding the cemetery is also very high and has not been cut since last year, says ward councillor Ramesh Sheodin.

In response to last year’s article, the metro stated that they do not have the funds to deploy a security force in the area or to replace the fence.

Replacing the fence will cost R3-million, according to the metro.

Sheodin says: “People have no respect, and even if the metro replaces the fence it will just get stolen again and again.

“Residents are very worried because now people are able to break in more due to the fence being missing.

“I’m not sure if there is anything to be done.”

The metro has failed to reply to our inquiries in time for publication.
