Resident appeals for transport help for Skoonplaas children

Magagula and van Wyk say unfortunately they don’t have have the capacity to help get the children of Skoonplaas get to school.

Olga Magagula worries that the children of Skoonplaas informal settlement are missing out on an education.

“Often when I am home, I see children of all ages running around when they should be in school.

“When I ask them why they are not in school, they say their parents said they don’t have money for transport,” says Magagula.

Some of the children, she says, go to school as far away as Daveyton.

Magagula, who works for the Jesus Outreach Feeding Scheme at the AFM Church in Modder East, is familiar with the residents of Skoonplaas.

Magagula and San van Wyk have been working together for the past 16 years.

“We feed more than 50 families per month, with some coming as far as Brakpan.

“We spend approximately R1 300 per family and we give them a bundle that consists of food, cleaning supplies and cosmetics.

“It is through donations that we’re able to do this, and with clothes, we sell them so we can get more funds to help people,” says van Wyk.
