Metro responds to cemetery vandalism

Security has been an issue for both sites since 2015 and the situation has taken a turn for the worst.

Earlier this year, cemeteries in Geduld and Bakerton were vandalised and the palisade fences were stolen.

Nhlanhla Cebekhulu, the divisional head of communication and media relations at the metro, says: “We are aware of the situation.

“For now the City is relying on the EMPD because obtaining security services for inactive grave sites is not affordable.”

Cebekhulu says replacing the fences at both cemeteries would cost around R3-million and the City cannot afford this amount of money.
