Van Zyl saw the door was wide open and ran home to fetch his firearm.

When he came back, he saw four men already loading a television into a car.

Van Zyl, who is a former police officer, says the men immediately opened fire when they saw him.

“It looked like at least three of them had guns on them.”

Van Zyl says he returned fire and the robbers ran into the house.

When they came out of the house, the entire group was shooting at him again.

The robbers then climbed into their car and sped off into the direction of KwaThema.

Van Zyl was not injured.

He is unsure if he wounded any of the robbers.

The television was left at the scene, and it looks like the robbers were also trying to carry a safe out of the house when van Zyl arrived.

The robbers were able to get away with some jewellery however.

Capt Johannes Ramphora of the Springs Police Station was not able to confirm that a case was opened following the incident.
