Armed suspects rob 5th Avenue clothing store leaving withv167 cellphones

One of the suspects was an old man wearing a navy jacket and a black straw. The suspects were speaking Sepedi and SeTswana.

The Exact Chain Store at The Avenues Shopping Centre was robbed by three suspects on Thursday afternoon, says Springs Police spokesperson, Capt Johannes Ramphora.

The complainant says when she came out of the storeroom she saw a tall man of fair complexion on his cellphone, while two other men stood at the till. When she approached the till, the tall suspect on the phone approached her and showed her a firearm and instructed her to go back to the storeroom.

Once there, the complainant was instructed to open the safe containing the cellphones, and a cupboard which also contained cellphones. She was also ordered to open a safe containing the float of R2 000.

The phones were loaded into two black sports bags. Thereafter the suspects ordered the employees and customers to stand in between clothing rails, and instructed them to remain there until the suspects left.

The suspects fled with 167 cellphones whose value is unknown. No personal belongings were taken and no shots were fired during the robbery.
