Metro urges parents to watch over children: Safety tips on drowning

Drowning is caused when water, or any other liquids, enter the lungs causing the person to suffocate.

The lungs are the life-sustaining organ of the body and circulate oxygen through the body.

As we enter the festive season, schools will soon be closing and children will be roaming and playing around, putting them at greater risk of drowning with swimming and other water-related activities.

Also, with more rain expected, unmonitored bodies of water will become more prevalent and parents are advised to keep their eyes on their children at all times.

The metro asks that citizens heed the following safety tips:

• Know where your children are and what they are doing.

• Keep your children away from rivers, lakes and all other open bodies of water.

• If you have a pool, erect a fence around it and ensure the gate remains locked.

• A cover sheet should be in place when the pool is not in use.

• Children in swimming pools should be monitored by an adult at all times.

• Ritual and religious practices in and around rivers and lakes by adults, still present a danger of drowning; life jackets should be worn at all times.
