Bakerton – Springs SAPS responded to an attempted ATM bombing in Bakerton on Tuesday morning.
“A resident who had gone to use a Standard Bank ATM next to a Caltex garage reported a suspicious-looking container, just after 9am,” says Capt Johannes Ramphora, spokesperson for the Springs police.
The concerned resident then called the Springs SAPS.
“They soon discovered that there was a second container, connected to the one in front of the ATM,” explains Ramphora.
The area was then cordoned off and people were evacuated, while the bomb squad was alerted.
Springs CPF chairperson Barend van Heerden reports that one of the bombs found in one of the containers was an explosive often used in mining.

“The SAPS Bomb Squad successfully removed both bombs from the area and finished the detonation.
“But it took a while to secure the area because we have to ensure the safety of the people and their property,” says Ramphora.
He warns that explosive devices can be hidden in different ways and containers.
“If something seems suspicious at an ATM, leave the area and call the SAPS,” he adds.
Ramphora says no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
