A Round Robin at Selection Park Tennis Club

Selection Park Tennis Club Round Robin ends this weekend

Selection Park Tennis Club seniors are almost at the end of a Round Robin Tournament they started a few weekends ago.

“In a Round Robin, all the participants have the opportunity to play with each other.

There are no knockouts,” explains Deidre Very, from the club.

Mike Du Toit is one of the participants in the current Round Robin Tournament at the Selection Park Tennis Club.

In a single round-robin schedule, each participant plays every other participant once.

But there are also doubles.

This means that each player or pair has the same number of matches to play.

In a single-elimination or knockout tournament, the loser of each match-up is immediately eliminated from the tournament.

This gives the ‘loser’ no chance of redeeming themselves.

Each winner will then play another winner in the next round.

This happens until the final match-up, whose winner becomes the tournament champion.

“After we have all played, we then calculate the scores.

The person with the highest score, from all the games, becomes the winner,” she continues.

She says this format is beneficial because it gives players who would otherwise get knocked out, the opportunity to play and strengthen their skill.

“In theory, a round-robin tournament is the fairest way to determine the best player from among a known and fixed number of contestants.”

The final round of the tournament will take place over the weekend, and the champions will be rewarded.
