Awengloed sewage disaster addressed by Metro

The majority of blockages are caused by the presence of foreign objects in the sewer network.

In response to a previous article, Sewage woes continue for Awengloed residents, metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe responded with the following:

“The metro officials responsible for sanitation sweeps the lines which have recurrent blockages and attend to complaints that are reported.

“The long-term solution lies in the constant education of the community in appropriate use of the sewer system.

“Media also has a role in reinforcing the messages on proper use of the sewer system.”

When asked what where the problems lie, he said: “The majority of blockages are caused by the presence of foreign objects in the sewer network.

“Technicians often remove rocks, rags, sand, oil and fats, carcasses etc. from the line.

“This amplifies the need to community involvement in finding the solution.”

Thus, the metro request that residents be mindful of what they put in the sink or flush down the toilet.

Do not flush foreign objects like rocks, rags, sand, oils and fats down the toilet or sink as this might cause blockages in the sewer system.
