No traffic lights for Welgedacht Road and Grootvaly Road intersection

The unit says speed camera enforcement is conducted on the road in question roughly four times a month.

In response to the Residents demand traffic lights at intersection article, the EMPD’s Speed Enforcement Unit says between January 2019 and July 2019 they have conducted over 28 speed camera operations on Welgedacht Road in Springs, which resulted in 7 894 fines being issued to motorists exceeding the speed limit.

The unit says speed camera enforcement is conducted on the road in question roughly four times a month.

EMPD media officer Kobeli Mokheseng says: “On March 26, we drafted and sent a request to the senior public prosecutor (SPP) to grant us permission to enforce up to Enstra Road, including Grootvaly because Welgedacht Road is director of public prosecutions (DPP) speed camera approved, between Boksburg Road and SAPS flats.

Residents plea for traffic lights at dangerous intersection

“Currently, we are patiently waiting for the reply from the SPP’s office; however, the speed unit continues with speed camera operations on that stretch of road.”

Despite the EMPD’s best efforts, the intersection remains dangerous, with 17 accidents recorded between January 1 and July 20 this year.

Mokheseng went on to say the EMPD works with other law enforcement agencies on a weekly basis, and often conducts stop-and-searches, traffic law enforcement, visible patrol, including roving roadblocks, and operations may vary on that stretch of road, depending on intelligence gathered.

In the meantime, the EMPD has appointed pointsmen to direct traffic every morning between 7am and 8am on weekdays, except public holidays.
