Sewage spilling out on North Avenue

The sewage is spilling out of a manhole cover on North Avenue and has flooded most of the road.

Sewage continues to run down Milner Avenue and North Avenue near Awengloed in Geduld and residents are frustrated with the metro’s lack of help.

The Addie previously reported on the problem in early June this year, but the problem persists and seems to be getting worse.

Awengloed is a municipal housing project for elderly people and is situated in North Avenue.

The sewage is spilling out of a manhole cover on North Avenue and has flooded most of the road.

According to Awengloed resident Barbara Pocock, the sewage started spilling out into the streets last Tuesday morning.

Residents phoned the metro on Tuesday and Wednesday and received a reference number, but the metro gave no indication that it would address the situation soon.

The sewage has caused a dam so large in Milner Avenue that it covers speed humps, and small cars are submerged almost to bumper level when they drive through it.

“You cannot cook with a stench like this right outside your house.

“This happens every two weeks and it is unacceptable.

“There are people here who have lung problems. They are on oxygen and this can’t be healthy for them,” says Pocock.

She says many residents are unable to use their toilets as they keep on backing up with the sewage.

According to Pocock the sewage also caused a motorbike accident in which two men were injured.

The metro failed to respond to our enquiries at the time of publication.
