Hospital denies mistreating patient

Far East Rand Hospital refutes the allegations against them and says they never took the patient to theatre as they do not have paediatric surgeons at the institution.

The Far East Rand Hospital has denied allegations that it mistreated a patient admitted to the hospital last Monday evening.

According to the family of the patient who cannot be named, the patient was allegedly taken to the operating room to have a feeding tube inserted without the permission of the parents.

“When my daughter came to check on her on Tuesday, we found out a feeding tube had been inserted and was stitched on to her stomach.

“Also, she had bruises all over her, which was very upsetting to us, she didn’t have a single mark on her when she was brought to the hospital,” says the grandmother.

The grandmother went on to say she was unhappy about the level of care given to her grandchild as she alleges the child had a nappy rash and during her stay at the hospital, was only given milk to drink.

The patient is disabled and is bed bound as a result of brain damage she received as an infant.

Far East Rand Hospital refutes the allegations against them and says they never took the patient to theatre as they do not have paediatric surgeons at the institution.

“According to our records, the patient was taken to theatre by Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital when she was 10 months old.

“On admission, the patient had threatening old bed sores and old wounds.

“The patient is fed through a peg, which makes it impossible for her to be served food,” says Phumza Ntuthuka, the communications officer at Far East Rand Hospital.

The hospital says the patient’s nappy was changed as and when needed by the nurses.
