Modderbee Correctional Facility spends Mandela Day at Far East Rand Hospital

To make a difference you don’t need money; it needs commitment, love, courage, everything that Nelson Mandela represented,” says Ramaboea.

Modderbee Correctional Facility staff spent their 67 minutes with the children in Far East Rand Hospital’s (FERH) paediatric ward last Thursday morning for Mandela Day.

The meeting between the two state entities almost felt like a family reunion as there was so much joy and love in the air.

Speaking at the start of the day, Modderbee chaplain Oscar Madlala urged staff to use the gifts they have been blessed with to do great things.

“If God has blessed you with riches, share those riches.

“If God has blessed you with wisdom, share your wisdom for the nation.

“If God has blessed you with leadership, don’t lead to oppress, lead to raise the place you are in to be above what it is now.

“Then each and every day can be Mandela Day,” says Madlala.

The hospital’s Dr Ramaboea says they were honoured to have Modderbee as part of their Mandela Day.

Ramaboea says Modderbee’s visit to the paediatric ward was important because it is children who are a true reflection of who we are as a society.

“As a society, we are judged based on the state of our children, and as it stands, our children are malnourished.

“If you lift up a child and tell them you love them, you’ve made a difference.

“To make a difference you don’t need money; it needs commitment, love, courage, everything that Nelson Mandela represented,” says Ramaboea.

Ramaboea urged all to make Mandela Day count by focusing on the future and finding ways to build each other up.

The staff from Modderbee ended the day by handing out gifts and soup to children in the paediatric ward.
