Veritas College holds cancer walk

The day also featured a heartfelt performance by the school choir, a marimba band, as well as line dancing.

Veritas Senior College hosted their annual Cancer Walk and Food Fest on Saturday.

The Veritas Cancer Walk works in sponsorship with The Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa), and all the donations go to them.

In addition to the fun walk, learners as well as teachers, set up stalls selling food and a variety of other interesting items as part of the food fest.

The food stalls featured cuisine from countries all over the world, such as Mexico, America and Spain.

The learners started off early to prepare the stalls and ensured that the day went smoothly.

Most of the items for sale were home-made.

The day also featured a heartfelt performance by the school choir, a marimba band, as well as line dancing.

Plenty of entertainment was on offer, such as a mechanical bull, a mechanical surfboard and weightlifting for those wishing to show off their strength.

DJs from East Rand Stereo were broadcasting live from the school in a trailer, blasting local music from speakers.

Another focus of the day was on the school’s Eco Club, who are busy making leaps and bounds in their efforts to make their school more eco-friendly.

They too had set up a stall where they sold plastic bracelets made from discarded plastic that would otherwise have ended up in the ocean.

Gemma Rees of the Eco Club says: “We have 50 members and we meet twice a week and discuss the issues the environment is facing.

“We had this idea of advertising at the food fest and handing out these bracelets to raise awareness.”

Springs Advertiser and African Reporter editor Samantha Keogh gave a speech, emphasising her admiration for the Eco Club’s efforts and stressed the importance of preserving the environment by making our spaces more eco-friendly.

She also encouraged other schools to take part in the recycling competition, which is being run by the Advertiser in conjunction with Veritas.
